Gemma Austin is to relocate her Belfast restaurant A Peculiar Tea when its lease comes to an end in October.

The chef has decided to leave the restaurant's current premises on University Road and move to a more modern and accessible location, but is yet to decide on a new property.

In a post on Instagram the restaurant says: "We created a pros and cons list and spent weeks deciding on whether this was the way to go, but several factors lead us to this decision."

"We are not closing! We have no intention to close. The dream is to find a spot that is easily accessible, more modern and disabled friendly."

The restaurant team had hoped to keep the move secret for longer but decided to reveal the move after the landlord put a To Let sign on the restaurant.

Austin created A Peculiar Tea was created as an escape from reality and the stresses of adult life. Known to her friends as a female Peter Pan, Austin's restaurant is inspired by the magic of children's imaginations and uses food to make guests feel a sense of nostalgia. playfulness.

It serves themed afternoon teas and also a seven-course set tasting menu in the evening. Its current afternoon tea menu is Alice in Wonderland themed as is its tasting menu, called 'Curiouser and Curiouser', which features dishes of crab, quail, monkfish, wild mushroom, mango, and cherry.

Earlier this month it announced that from June it would be introducing a 'Petite Tasting' concept that will replace its tasting menu. Its afternoon tea will also be changing and will next month come in two forms: classical or peculiar. "We are going to provide an experience like no other, that we can guarantee," its says.

The restaurant says the plan is also to have no closure period if possible, and to have reopened in its new location by October.
